Nicolaus Copernicus: Early Life and Education

Born in Toruń, in Royal Prussia, Copernicus hailed from a well-to-do merchant family. After the death of his parents, he was taken under the wing of his maternal uncle, Lucas Watzenrode, the Bishop of Warmia, who ensured his education. He studied at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, focusing on the liberal arts, and later continued his studies in Italy, attending the universities of Bologna and Padua, where he delved into canon law, medicine, and astronomy.

The Heliocentric Theory

During his time in Bologna, Copernicus collaborated with astronomer Domenico Maria da Novara, engaging in astronomical observations. These experiences led him to question the prevailing Ptolemaic geocentric model, which placed Earth at the center of the universe. In 1514, Copernicus drafted a manuscript known as the “Commentariolus,” outlining the fundamental principles of his heliocentric theory. His comprehensive work, “De revolutionibus orbium coelestium” (“On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres”), was published in 1543, shortly before his death.

Copernicus’s theory challenged centuries of astronomical and theological tradition by proposing that Earth and other planets orbit the Sun.
